Our shelter is a small rural shelter and the total number of animals varies day by day. Our shelter is run by our Animal Control staff of five officers, a Shelter Manager, and a Shelter Attendant. We are responsible for covering 452 square miles in Smyth County and deal with cats, dogs, livestock, and wildlife. Our shelter has 29 dog runs and 33 cat cages. We try to keep euthanasia numbers as low as possible, but it is our responsibility to the community to evaluate animals behaviorally and medically and make decisions that are in the best interest of the community as well as the animal. We will not adopt out an animal that we believe could be a safety risk to the community. Also, we (thankfully) have not had to make many decisions due to space, but we could easily find ourselves in that situation. We operate based on a waitlist for owner-surrendered animals to try to minimize the need to euthanize for space, but it could happen depending on various circumstances.
